“L’Union Fait La Force” Opening Reception Celebrates Haitian Heritage Month

On the evening of May 4th, 2024, Island SPACE Caribbean Museum set the stage for a momentous inauguration of Haitian Heritage Month with the grand opening reception of the “L’Union Fait la Force”  exhibition, curated by the esteemed Jimmy Joseph Moise, founder of Le P’tit Club.

As the attendees entered the gallery, they were enveloped in a kaleidoscope of colors, all reflecting the vibrant culture of Haiti. Guests were welcomed with signature cocktails crafted by Kaki Rum, setting the tone for an evening of cultural immersion. Haitian culinary delights awaited, prepared and provided by Chef Thia, who presented the Haitian traditional meal, djon djon rice,  inviting nostalgia and delight amongst guests.

Island SPACE Co-founder and CEO, Calibe Thompson welcomed attendees to Island SPACE Caribbean museum, giving insight into Island SPACE’s history and mission. Thompson was then followed by a captivating address by none other than Philippe Dodard, a luminary in the realm of Haitian art, whose words resonated deeply, stirring contemplation and appreciation for the profound heritage encapsulated within each stroke of the exhibited pieces. Following Dodard’s talk, the stage was handed over to the artists themselves, each offering insights into their creative process and the narratives encapsulated within their works.

The evening came to a close with a brilliant performance by TLO France, who captured the crowd with with energy and fervor. This was followed by a showcase by Boom Boom, whose magnetic presence left a lasting impression.

Among the distinguished guests at the occasion was Edouard Duval Carrie, an emblematic figure within the Haitian art scene. Additionally, Cynthia Verna, a celebrated chef, who contributed to the event’s atmosphere by providing a taste of traditional Haitian cuisine, and presented Haitian spices for a display.

As the evening wore on, the air was the night was filled with music, art, food, and drink, all in celebration of Haiti and its culture and serving as reminders of the resilience, vibrancy, and enduring spirit of Haiti and its people. Island SPACE Caribbean Museum paid homage to Haiti’s cultural legacy, ushering in a month-long celebration of heritage, unity, and boundless creativity.
