The St. Lucia Consulate General of Miami, in partnership with the Iyanola Cultural Society, invites the public to celebrate the cherished Saint Lucian Festival of Light on Wednesday, December 11, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at Island SPACE Caribbean Museum. This cultural tradition marks the start of the Christmas season in Saint Lucia and is tied to December 13, the feast day of Saint Lucia (Saint Lucy), the patron saint of light who symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness.
The evening will feature cultural presentations and appearances from St. Lucian Consul General of Miami, Darrel Montrope, along with members of the Iyanola Cultural Society, who will share insight into the history, meaning, and artistry behind this iconic celebration. All are welcome to join in the storytelling and community festivities honoring Saint Lucian heritage.
For generations, Saint Lucians have crafted handmade lanterns—originally displayed in doorways to “light the way”—a tradition that has evolved into a spirited national lantern-making competition each December. Continuing this legacy under the patronage of the Office of the Governor General of Saint Lucia, the Festival of Light Lantern Competition challenges makers to submit original, creative hanging lantern designs that are visually striking, battery powered, and between one and three feet in length for competition judging. During the event, judges will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cash prizes in both adult and youth (17 and under) categories.
Come experience our version of this holiday tradition and parade with the community on December 11th as we celebrate light, creativity, and connection.
Sign up to enter the competition here. All lanterns must be ready for submission and judging at the event.
