Island SPACE Caribbean Museum Presents “Movements del Corazón: A Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibit”

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Island SPACE Caribbean Museum proudly presents Movements del Corazón: A Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibit, an evocative showcase of artwork from across the Latin diaspora. This exhibition explores the dynamic theme of “movement” in all its forms—physical, emotional, social, historical, and spiritual—through the lens of talented artists. The exhibit has been on display since September 5, 2024, and will continue through November 24, 2024.

Visitors to Island SPACE Caribbean Museum can experience this unique exhibition as part of their regular admission, priced at $15 for adults and $7 for children. The exhibit invites audiences to reflect on the many ways in which movement shapes personal and collective experiences.

Movements del Corazon: A Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibit is made possible in part by the support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Broward County Cultural Division, “King” George Jograj, Dr. Lydia Malcom of Authentic Behavioral Health LLC, and her husband, Mr. Waynewright Malcolm, and the following funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Judith Cornfeld Fund for the Arts, Helen and Frank Stoykov Charitable Endowment Fund, The Frederick A. Her early work included pastels, watercolors, and charcoal before transitioning to oil on canvas, which has become her signature medium. Her painting “Hawaiian Heavenly Flower” won a prestigious competition, earning a feature in Art & Beyond magazine.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Through Art

The artist reception for Movements del Corazón took place on Friday, September 13, 2024, and was moderated by former Island SPACE board member Vivian Estalella. Attendees enjoyed an evening of engaging discussions with the artists, delving deeper into their inspirations and the significance of movement in their work.

“While we recognize Caribbean heritage year round, it’s awesome to be able to shine a light on individual communities within the Island SPACE family. Our program coordinator Neddjie “Stephanie” Bien-Aime curated this Hispanic Heritage Month exhibit with the intention of showcasing the diversity and richness of Latin-Caribbean artistry,” said Calibe Thompson, Island SPACE board president. “I’m inspired by the breathtaking works on display, and have bought a few pieces from this collection for myself!”

The exhibit embodies the museum’s mission to elevate Caribbean culture through the arts, history, and education. Visitors can experience Movements del Corazón as part of the museum’s broader commitment to representing the region’s vibrant culture.
