The nonprofit organization Island SPACE was founded on September 26, 2019, with a vision to create a dedicated space to honor and celebrate the collective history, culture, and contributions of Caribbean people. What began as a small pop-up series evolved into the first and only brick-and-mortar Caribbean heritage museum in the world—a vital institution for cultural preservation, artistic expression, and education.
Recognizing the absence of a centralized space anchoring the one in four South Florida residents born in the English, Spanish, French, and Dutch Caribbean, the board of directors of Island SPACE launched its flagship initiative—Island SPACE Caribbean Museum. The institution officially opened on November 16, 2020 at Broward Mall in Plantation, Florida, in the midst of the COVID pandemic.
Today, the museum features an impressive collection of artifacts, iconic paraphernalia, cultural relics, historical data and fine art collections. Inside the facility, guests learn the story of the history, heritage and culture of the Caribbean people and the impact of the Caribbean diaspora on the American landscape.
Since its opening, the museum has:
Beyond its internal programming, Island SPACE has become a hub for Caribbean governmental, cultural, and academic engagement. Nearly every Caribbean consulate based in South Florida has participated in events at the museum, which also enjoys support from partners like Bahamas Tourism, the Jamaica Tourist Board, the Consulates General of Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad & Tobago, and the Caribbean Bar Association. Additionally, we are the home of the Jamaican Consul General’s Distinguished Lecture Series, where government ministers and thought leaders address key issues monthly.
2022 NBC6 Feature on Our Original Location
Our work has garnered national and international media attention, with features in NBC, NPR, WSVN, the Miami Herald, the Jamaica Gleaner, and other major outlets. Our board of directors reflects the diversity of our mission, with members having represented Jamaica, Trinidad, Suriname, Barbados, Haiti, Cuba, and The Bahamas.
Island SPACE is also a proud partner of Broward County Public Schools, regularly welcoming students—many of Caribbean descent—who gain the rare opportunity to see leaders from their ancestral homelands who have positively shaped the U.S. and the world. Additionally, our events provide economic opportunities for small businesses and community organizations, offering stipends to local partners and commerce opportunities to vendors.
Island SPACE stands at the forefront of cultural preservation, education, and advocacy.
Island SPACE is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Broward County Cultural Division, BBX Capital Foundation, Community Reinvestment Alliance of Florida, “King” George Jograj, Dr. Lydia Malcom of Authentic Behavioral Health LLC, and her husband, Mr. Waynewright Malcolm, Alexandra P.
