The Consul General?s Distinguished Lecture Series welcomed 153 attendees at Island SPACE Caribbean Museum on the evening of March 27, 2025. This event shed light on the transformation of the Jamaica Constabulary Force with a presentation by Dr. Kevin Blake, Jamaica?s Commissioner of Police. The event was presented in partnership with Oliver Mair, Consul General of Jamaica, and supported by Authentic Behavioral Health et Coconuts and Cocktails.
Advancing Policing Standards and Public Safety Initiatives
Dr. Blake provided an in-depth overview of the rigorous training process that police officers in Jamaica undergo, highlighting why their program is among the select few worldwide to receive ISO 9001 certification for its exceptional structure and quality. He also discussed new opportunities for officer promotions, advanced technologies currently in use and those still in development to enhance public safety. Additionally, he outlined the ongoing construction of new buildings and infrastructure aimed at improving community engagement and service delivery. Finally, he emphasized the department’s accomplishments, including an 18% reduction in crime, marking the lowest crime rate Jamaica has seen in the past 25 years.
Attendees engaged with Dr. Blake through questions about the potential implementation of body cameras, programs to support the elderly, and measures to protect women facing domestic abuse. His responses provided valuable insight into the police department’s operations, community initiatives, and ongoing efforts to maintain a low crime rate. By the end of the discussion, attendees left with a clearer understanding of the department?s priorities, and its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the Jamaican people and the tourists that visit the island.
