Puerto Rican Designer Theo Azael Holds Press Conference at Island SPACE Caribbean Museum

Friday, September 15th, Island SPACE hosted a special press conference for Puerto Rican Designer Theo Azael. In anticipation of the upcoming “The Unearthly Worlds of Theo Azael” fashion show and exhibit, Island SPACE hosted an exclusive, press only event where news outlets from around South Florida could take a sneak peak at the extravagant and dramatic aesthetics that Azael will bring.

The night began with an interview with the two co-founders of Island SPACE Caribbean Museum: Calibe Thompson and David Muir. They talked about the excitement they have over having the opportunity to host such a creative and unique show, Thompson mentions how working with Azael has already been a creative and exciting experience.

Next, MC Frankie “Red” Rosso, who has played a huge role in the organizing the events as Theo Azael’s producer, and Azael’s assistant and seamstress, Christina, took the stand to answer questions. Christina mentions how she likes making people uncomfortable with her work, how being weird and different is what drives her designs in a lot of ways.

Lastly, the star of the show Theo Azael, with two of his models in tow, arrived to answer questions. Theo Azael talks about his process with making the garments, describing things such as bathing them in moonlight, all of these are different ways Azael infuses his designs with energy.

Theo Azael incorporates raw edges, distressed fabric, exposed seams and frayed garments. Giving garments an unfinished appearance is Azael’s way of  displaying his design process through the garments. He describes his tendency as elements of beauty that hides esoteric energy between his garments, his design technique is widely used to shock the audience with the unusual or uncanny.

After the questions were answered, the time came for a special unveiling: the Window Display. After designing a new set piece for the Island SPACE Window Display, Theo Azael revealed his creation to the news and media. This piece serves as a preview to the aesthetics that will be viewed during the show and exhibit.

Afterwards, press and media were invited inside the verandah where they got the opportunity to ask Theo Azael and his models questions about the upcoming exhibit and fashion show. Press and media got to not only get answers from the creative master himself, but they got to experience a small fashion show introducing Azael’s models. After many pictures were taken and light drinks were had, the night came to a close.
