On the evening of March 13, 2025, Black LGBTQ+ Liberation Inc. (BLINC) hosted the highly anticipated opening reception of RE/IMAGINE – Liberating Queer Futures at Island SPACE Caribbean Museum, bringing a celebratory start to the two-month long art installation. With more than 70 guests in attendance, the event celebrated the power of visual art in exploring liberation, identity, and the reimagining of gender and sexuality beyond colonial constructs. It was a night filled with creativity, music, and the spirit of self-expression.
An Evening of Art, Identity, and Liberation
The evening began with guests mingling and exploring the Island SPACE gallery, where they had the opportunity to view stunning artworks and engage with some of the featured artists. Visitors also toured the museum while enjoying delicious food and drinks, courtesy of Sarita Martine Bistro. DJ She-J Hercules set the tone with an uplifting soundtrack, adding to the vibrant energy of the night.
BLINC co-founder G Wright welcomed attendees, expressing gratitude for their support of the RE/IMAGINE exhibit. Brianna Pierre-Georges, a Haitian-American dancer whose movements blended contemporary, modern, jazz funk, and Haitian folklore, then delivered a mesmerizing performance.
Wright introduced the attending artists, inviting them to share the stage. She spoke about BLINC’s mission, the lasting impact of the Thou Art Woman performance series, and the collaborative efforts that brought RE/IMAGINE to life. Co-founder Nik Harris then took the stage to thank guests and introduced a special fundraiser, offering attendees a chance to win a cash prize.
Curator Kerry Chen later shared her creative vision for the exhibit, discussing themes of liberation and queer futurism. Some of the featured artists then stepped forward to reflect on their artistic journeys and the significance of their works. The night concluded on a heartwarming note when raffle winners generously donated their winnings back to BLINC and Island SPACE—an inspiring act of community support.
From powerful performances to thought-provoking art, the evening left guests with a deeper appreciation for the intersection of art and identity, further cementing Thou Art Woman’s legacy of fostering LGBTQ+ artistic expression in South Florida.
